IT’S NEVER TOO LATE

An expert in juggling the many roles that she has to play in her life, Maylin shares more about the importance of exercise to her and what her secret is. 

WHEN DID YOU START GETTING INTO EXERCISE?
I was always interested in exercise from a young age, having been part of the school athletics and netball teams. It was also during my college days in the US that I remember seeing my roommates and was taken aback at how physically fit and health conscious they were. Yes those days in the late 1970s coming from Asia l really had no idea about what other forms of exercise existed and real food like salads. These days we are so fortunate with all the choices we have. This knowledge helped to lay the foundation of what became an important part of my active lifestyle in the later part of my life.

HOW DID YOU MANAGE THE TEMPTATIONS OF LIVING IN A FOREIGN CITY?
I believe in 'we are what we eat' and portion size matters. It is also about making healthier choices and understanding how food affects us. Once you are on the right path, you do not feel good when you stray. Of course we all have our cheat days and we should, but it is our mindset that matters in the end.

WHAT WAS THE TURNING POINT FOR YOU THAT MADE YOU REALISE THE IMPORTANCE OF EXERCISE?
I believe that came when l turned 40. What l was doing i.e. ad hoc exercise routine and fad diets were not working well. I was serious about making commitments that were challenging yet sustainable. So l challenged myself to take on a more focused and rigorous exercise routine and upped my knowledge on food as l believe we are what we eat and in doing so, we must know what it is we are eating. You also need to set goals for your own self and stick to it. Each one is different and you just need to find out what works for you. I enjoy my yoga and weight training as much as my spinning, outdoor biking and hiking. I think it is important too to have a community of like minders and/or exercise buddies to encourage one another as you go on this journey. At XYZ l have found this happy community and made new friendships with people who share a common goal - To be fit and healthy.

Like anything else that you take seriously, you have to plan. Thus amidst all my client meetings and social / business gathering l would diligently pencil in my workout time each week. A schedule l have kept up all these years till now.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU HAVE TO OTHERS WHO ARE EMBARKING ON THEIR FITNESS JOURNEY?
It’s really never too late to start now - no matter what age you are at! For starters, ask yourself; Are you happy with the way you look? Are you happy with the way you feel? If the answer is no, then do something about it. Make that change and challenge yourself. Make exercise your priority and eating clean your goal. Choose what works for you and stay focused. You will be amazed at the results. Let this not be a chore or something you have to do but instead because you want to do it. Get help and advice if you need it. You do not have to do this on your own as there are people out there who share the same goals. Everyone has a choice, and if you aren’t happy with the way things are going, then you have to be open to changing. 

Hong Kong is a stressful city. Exercise really helps to relieve stress.

SO THERE REALLY IS NO SECRET TO LOOKING SO YOUNG? 
Sadly enough none from me. It is all about choices we make. Then comes pure hard work and lots of sweat. You will feel and sleep better after a workout and it shows. People will start to notice the difference in your mood, physique and overall wellbeing. I have been a positive influence on both my husband and son. It is funny how my husband and l would share notes on how active our day or week has been through our activity app. My son recently took on a new exercise program and he told me he is now at the best place in his life as far as fitness is concerned.

WHAT’S YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE?
Chocolate! I must have a piece of raw dark (70%) chocolate everyday.

WHAT’S YOUR TYPICAL MORNING ROUTINE?
I am an early riser. Stretching is important given the amount of exercise l do. Thus straight onto my yoga mat to do 15-20 minutes of yoga and roller stretching. I feel that it helps to wake up my mind and body, and re-align for the day. Breakfast is my favourite meal. Then off to work. I try to fit my cardio and strength training everyday into my work schedule. I like my evenings to be free to unwind and spend time with family and friends.
